When competitors become business partners: the origin story of Four Roots Pet Products!

Four Roots Pet Products was founded by Melissa and Hauke of The Complete K9, alongside Amanda and Matt of Grand Dog Essentials. Our history, however, began long before this partnership.

It started when Greg, the founder of Grand Dog, began purchasing raw food for his German Shepherd, Kanti, from Hauke in Red Deer. Greg eventually purchased Hauke’s raw pet food business and launched Grand Dog in 2018, honouring Kanti’s legacy in the company logo.

Meanwhile, The Complete K9—a family business founded by Don and Colleen in 2010—built a dedicated following by making raw feeding easy and affordable. Following a devastating fire at their facility in 2022, Melissa and Hauke worked together to ensure the brand remained a permanent fixture in Alberta.

During this time, Grand Dog and The Complete K9 were friendly competitors who recognized the unique value each brand brought to the market. In 2024, everything changed when Grand Dog reached out to Melissa and Hauke to collaborate. We soon realized our values and visions for the future of the raw pet food industry were identical. From that synergy, Four Roots Pet Products was born.

Four Roots carries on The Complete K9 legacy while also manufacturing new, high-quality blends under the Four Roots name. Our two brands are manufactured under one roof, complementing one another to provide a wide array of options, from DIY raw feeding to convenient, balanced boxes.

Founded on a commitment to quality, safety, and manufacturing excellence, our goal is to elevate industry standards in Alberta while maintaining competitive pricing. We are committed to complete transparency regarding our ingredients, recipes, and batch tracking.

More than just a brand, Four Roots is a community hub designed to bring people together with the common goal of helping our pets live long, healthy lives.
